This hand-colored engraving clearly delineates the overall layout of the estate of Versailles and its different zones, organized around a central axis running from west to east (from top to bottom of the plan). In the western section, the park includes the Menagerie and the Marble Trianon on either side of the mile-long Grand Canal. Between the canal and the palace lies the checkerboard of groves and parterres. On the town side, a succession of courtyards opens onto three avenues flanking the royal stables.
