Between 1701 and 1764, this successful guidebook went through numerous editions and was constantly revised and enlarged. The opening plan (similar to the colored one displayed on the wall above) shows the impressive dimensions that Versailles—palace, gardens, and town—had achieved by the end of Louis XIV’s reign. At the lower right can be seen the Château de Clagny, built in 1674 for the king’s mistress, Madame de Montespan (1641–1707), and demolished in 1769.
