This volume has been left closed in order to display a typical royal presentation binding: red morocco leather, gilt arms of Louis XIV framed by a triple gilt fillet panel, crowned royal cipher in each corner, and a triple gilt fillet outer border. Luxurious books such as this one were produced at great expense by the crown and presented as gifts to a highly select group of dignitaries and foreign ambassadors. This publication, which contains engravings by Sébastien Le Clerc after Charles Le Brun, is one of the earliest volumes from the Cabinet du Roi series.
