In addition to the groups forming the Baths of Apollo (designated here as E and F), the Grotto housed statues of the shepherd-turned-river Acis (C) and the sea nymph Galatea (D), tragic lovers known from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The water features included a large jet strong enough to reach the vault (B) and a hydraulic organ (G).

Graphic Arts Collection. Acquired by Princeton in 1886 in an exchange with the Bibliothèque nationale (Paris). John S. Pierson, Class of 1840, effected the exchange, recorded by the BN as “Double échangé” no. 907.
