Little is known about Laurent Morellet (or Morelet), a cleric who chose the pseudonym “sieur Combes” when he wrote this curious guidebook to the palace and gardens. In addition to explaining (more or less accurately) the historical and mythological subjects represented in the paintings and sculptures, he also took pains to identify the artists who created them. The book, which does not include any illustrations, was quickly translated into English and German.
